How will I plan and deliver instruction that is responsive to student learning needs?
To answer this question, I must first make sure I know all my students and how each one of them will learn/benefit from my instruction. Before, any lesson that I teach I make sure to plan out the lesson to benefit all my student learning needs in my classroom. The classroom of students that I have are so diverse so it’s important to hit all the different learning styles for each lesson. I know that a lot of my students are visual learners so it’s important to show them the content in many visual ways. I make sure to plan lessons that have a lot of visual aids like having pictures, videos, etc. so the students don’t just hear me teach about the topic but see it too. Also, I make sure to plan and deliver my instruction where I’m not the one talking all the time. I have seen first-hand that when students have hands-on activities and work with their peers they retain the information better than if I was to stand up in the front of the classroom and lecture the entire time. Having the students learn this way is responsive to their learning needs because I plan and deliver my instruction around the students not myself.
Also, when I plan and deliver instruction and making sure I am being responsive to my students’ learning needs I always make sure that I am differentiating. I have a morning group and afternoon group and those two groups have completely different learners in them. Each group has students with learning disabilities/ESE students, but the afternoon group has a lot more students that fall into those categories. I make sure for the afternoon group that when I plan and deliver my instruction there is more guidance for those students. Also, I have to change around some of the math questions that they do for “morning work” based on what will benefit their learning and how successful they will be at accomplishing that task. When working with my small group of students that have a LD or ESE I make sure to not overwhelm them with work and take my instruction one step at a time. I have notice if I give this small group too many tasks at one time they are not successful at completing the task or it’s not done correctly. So, when I plan and deliver my instruction for this small group I make sure that I take things slower and do things one step at a time with them. Also, I try to differentiate within that small group based on each student learning abilities and their student learning needs. Overall, with all the students it is important that I plan and deliver instruction that is responsive to student learning needs and I think so far, I have a good handle at doing this but there is always room for improvement.
