This week I took action for my inquiry which is, what happens when I work more one-on-one with a below level student that seems to not be progressing in their education. The first thing that I did was write out a list of strategies I could use when working one-on-one with the student. Then while in the classroom I helped this student out and tried to figure out what he really needed from me so that he could walk away understanding the content more. While helping this student, I made sure that I took some field notes on what was working and what I noticed from interacting/observing this student. Then at the end of the day I asked my CT if I could see some more work/tests from this student so I could collect more data.

I took all those actions as a teacher because I need to understand this student’s learning process and the patterns that he takes when trying to understand/learn something. If I can get a better understanding of what I should do when working with him one-on-one it will help me out with my inquiry. Also, taking field notes will make me more aware of what is going on and it helps me remember what happened that day and that can help me with my future interactions with this student.

When I worked with this student I could tell that he wasn’t really focusing on the work he had to do. I would have to say something to this student multiple times to really have him understand a concept. Even though I could tell he was struggling with the content I could tell that he liked this one-on-one time with me. He responded very well to me working with him and by the end of this one-on-one time the student was more focused and wanted me to keep working with him.

Next time I work with this student there are a few actions/changes I would like to take in my teaching. I worked with this student at his desk and he seemed to get distracted from the other students around him and so next time I will work with him at the back table with no other students around. Also, I need to make sure that I clarify almost everything to this student so that he does feel lost or confused. Then I think it is best if I break things down for him so he can just take one step at a time when he is working on something. Overall, I feel like my inquiry is going good so far and it will be interesting to see where it goes.
