For this lesson I pulled a small group and did a guided reading with the students. I had the group work with a book called Pay Attention and asked them questions about it. I feel I successfully achieved the lesson objectives because the questions I asked to the students were answered correctly and the students were able to give their reasoning's for their answers. For example, I asked the students, “Just looking at the cover of this book do you think it is a fiction or nonfiction book? And why?” and the students answered by saying the book was fiction because it has characters in it. Also, my lesson objective was making sure the students understood the highlighted vocabulary words in the book. I first said the vocabulary word out loud so that the students could hear it and then asked them what they thought the word meant. At first the students’ answers were somewhat close to the meanings of the words but they still needed more information to get the correct answers. So as a group we read the first two pages and I stopped the students again and asked what the highlighted words meant and they were able to give a better definition this time around.
During this lesson I felt having a small group worked well because I could have students with the same reading levels come work with me on a book that is on their level. Also, I think having the students examine the cover of the book first before opening it really seemed to help the students because they got information about the book before they even started to read it. The students were able to identify that the book was fiction and the characters that were going to be in it before even opening the book. So having the students work on the story structure first seemed to really work for this lesson. If I had teach this lesson again to the same group of students I would refine the part of having them read along with me because I noticed that some of the students would just stop reading and I would be the only one reading. For next time I would have the students take turns reading out loud in the group so that I could hear how they are reading and what they need help with. Also, if I read along with the students I can’t really tell if they are truly following along or comprehending what they are reading.
Based on the students learning of the objectives my next steps would be to call the same group back and talk about the story again. This time I would review the highlighted vocabulary words with them again and see if they can remember the meanings of them. Then I would ask the students if they could write a story similar to the book Pay Attention with those vocabulary words in it. I would also give the students the words with the definitions so they could go back and look at them if they get stuck when writing their stories. Having the students do this will show me that they understood the plot of the book and that they can use those words correctly in their own writings.
As I reflect over this observation cycle I am discovering some things about my teaching. I discovered that I really like doing guided readings and working with smaller groups. Also, when one of the students kept on interrupting other students or myself I discovered that by just asking him nicely to wait until someone is done speaking and then raising his hand to be called on worked. I noticed that just speaking calmly and nicely to that student made him listen to me. Also, I think if I yelled at him or changed the tone of my voice when speaking to him would really discourage him from talking and giving his ideas/opinions about the book. I could tell he was just excited to answer and I discovered that I could control his behavior without getting mad at him. Overall, I think that this lesson went really well and I would do it again.
