Collaborating Teacher Observation 2: Reflection

For this lesson I worked with the students on addition and subtraction word problems from a worksheet I printed out for the class. The lesson’s objective was to have students know/explain how they got their answers for the word problems. I feel that I successfully achieved the lesson objective because when I had students come up to the front of the classroom and show their work on the board and explain how they got their answers to the class they were able to do so. For example, one student explained/showed the class that she solved a problem by drawing a picture for it. Then another student explained that he figured out that one problem was subtraction because of how the problem was worded.

During the lesson I felt that having the students come up and show how they solved a problem worked well because it showed me their thinking process and it also showed the students different ways to solve word problems. So having the students come up and show their work to the class helped out some students that were struggling when solving the problem because it showed them a different way to solve it. If I were to teach this lesson again to the same class I would refine how many problems I would work out with the whole class. I only reviewed with the whole class one problem that wasn’t on the worksheet and I think that some students might have needed more examples before I sent them off to work on their own. Even though I noticed that the students understood the problems I still should’ve worked out more example with the whole class and so they would have more review.

Based on the students learning of the objective my next steps would be to have the class work with more addition and subtraction word problems but adding in some two-step word problems. Right now I feel like the class understands one-step word problems, so by adding in some two-step word problems I could see if they are ready for them. If I see that some students are having a hard time and other students are getting the two-step word problems then I might just have the students that are struggling to work in small groups with me so I could help them feel more comfortable with moving on to two-step word problems.

As I reflect over this observation cycle I am discovering that I really like to teach math lessons. I always thought that I would dislike teaching math but since I've been helping my CT out with lessons and doing my own lessons for math I discovered I really enjoy teaching it. I also like to come up with creative math lessons for the students. Also, I am discovering that I rather have my lessons be more student-centered over teacher-centered. Reflecting over this lesson I think that it went really well and I would do it again.
