Three Transitions

During my internship I have watched my CT do different transitions. I noticed that my CT gets the attention of the whole class before she transitions into something else by using her attention getting strategy, which is where she says, "Class Class" and the students respond, "Yes Yes." Getting the students to pay attention is very important before moving on to something new because it shows that they are all paying attention and understand what they have to do. For example, if the teacher transitions into Social Studies and doesn't have the attention of the whole class then they might miss what page to turn to and work on. Then the class will keep on asking what they need to do and that can waste class time. So I assumed responsibility for handling three transitions during one day at my internship school. Before each transition I made sure to use my CT's attention getting strategy so all the student would be paying attention. The first transition I made was from reading to lunch. I had the students put their reading folders away and then I started calling tables to line up. Then I walked the class to the lunch room and made sure they were all in the lunch line or at their lunch tables before I left them. Then the second transition I did was bringing the students back from lunch to the classroom. I had them get out their math books and work on certain pages while they use their manipulatives to help them solve the problems. Then the last transition I did for that day was moving from math into science. I told the students to clean up all the manipulatives and put their math books away. Then I passed out their science books and read about temperature with the students. All of these transitions went very smoothly because I got all the students to pay attention and gave them clear instructions.
