Supervisor Observation 1: Reflection

On my supervisor observation day I did a part of a Morning Meeting. I decided to do a sharing activity with the students. The sharing activity topic was about, "My Partner's Future" and I had the students write down on a note cards what they wanted to be when they grow up. Then I had them share with a partner and then had them share what their partner said to the whole class.

I think that I successfully achieved the lesson objectives because each student was able to answer the question, "What you want to be when you grow up?" I also think that the lesson objectives were able to achieve because I wrote out a sentence and put it on the bored so the students could have an example of how to start their own sentence. For example my sentence said, "When I grow up I want to be a _______ because ______." Having this example for the student to look at gave them a better understand of what I was looking for. Also, the student that have a hard time with starting their own sentence could use mine and fill in the blanks. I also, said an example out loud saying, "When I was your age I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up because I wanted to help children learn."

Having the students work with a partner seemed to really work for this Morning Meeting. I gave the students a change to talk and share their answers before sharing them to the class. Also, having them share their partners' answers instead of their own made them have to listen and pay attention to their partners. Looking back at the video of the lesson I could see that I would change how much time I would give the students to share with their partners because I kept on asking if them needed more time and they did. So if I did this Morning Meeting again with the same class I would add more time for them to share and work on their answers. Also, I would have them add I good reason why they chose the job they picked because when I asked some of them that question this time they weren't prepared to answer it.

The students' learning objectives showed that they could share and answer the question that was asked. My next steps after this Morning Meeting is to have them share more about what their peers think. Having the student recall and share what their peers said really shows me the are listening and understanding the lesson. So I would use the same learning objectives with a real lesson plan that didn't have to deal with a Morning Meeting. For example, I could have them share to their partners what they learned while reading a certain passage and then have them share their partner's answer to the class.

As I look back over this observation cycle I noticed that I like to have the student work in groups and give them opportunities to share and communicate with their classmates. I also noticed I like the classroom to be more student focused and having different ways to get them involved. I like to explain the instructions but then have the students work the questions out and help one another. I think if I stand up in the front of the class and talk the whole time the students are not going to be engaged and they will start to get bored. The students are still at an age were they need to get up and move around and have group work. Overall, I think that this Morning Meeting and first supervisor observation went really well. Watching the video of my lesson showed me what I can work on for next time and what I didn't see while teaching. The students seems to really like this activity and I think the lesson objectives were successfully achieved.
