Dismissal Routine

For the first three weeks in my internship I have watched my CT do the dismissal routine and I thought that I have seen it enough of times to take the lead. Before I started the dismissal routine I made sure I gave the student plenty of time to get ready. I was working with a group for Science and my CT had another group she was working with and there was a lot of talking going on. To get the students' attention I did the attention getting strategy my CT uses. I said "Class class" and the students stopped what they were doing and said "Yes yes" back to me. I told them to start cleaning up for dismissal and start stacking their chairs. All the students followed my directions and started cleaning up. I noticed that the students get really into stacking their chairs during dismissal. Is it because it gives them some responsibility? Or are they just excited about going home? I think that it has to be a mixture of both because even in the morning the students like to take the chairs out of the stacks. Then I told them I would start calling them to lineup when I see they are all ready to go. I called them to lineup by the groups they go home in. For example I said, "Car-liners line up, daycare line up, green bus line up, pink bus line up, etc." Having the students lineup in groups makes in so much easier to get them where they need to be. When I was calling them to lineup I would ask the students if I named all the bus colors. Asking the students the questions about the buses made them get involved and showed me that they understand the dismissal routine. Then after they were all lined up my CT and I walked all of them to their right areas for dismissal. I really like how all the teachers walk each student to their right area for dismissal. The main thing that I think is important is how the teachers make sure the students get on the right bus because there are so many of them and they all look alike. Overall, taking the lead on the dismissal routine went smoothly and I can't wait to do it again.
